Dental anxiety

Nervous about a dental visit? Let's talk.

You don't have to feel ready for everything to make an appointment. Tell us what feels difficult, and we'll talk about where to begin.

You might dread the sound of the instruments, worry about pain, or remember a time you tried to speak up and weren't heard. Sometimes you can't put your finger on it; you just know you're tense. A simple 'I'm nervous about this' is enough for us to start talking.

What helps is different for each person

Would you like Dr. Maiurano to explain each step, or would you prefer a little less detail? Is lying back difficult? Have you had trouble getting numb? Those are useful things to tell us. A preference that seems small can make a real difference to your appointment.

Before treatment, we'll agree on a hand signal for a break. If something hurts or doesn't feel numb enough, use it. Please let us know right away. We'll pause safely, listen, and address your concern before continuing.

Start with a visit you can picture

Knowing what to expect can help. When you call, ask about the first visit and whether a shorter appointment or an initial consultation would suit you. Once Dr. Maiurano has examined you, she can explain what needs attention and whether it is safe to take things a little at a time.

Tell us about previous experiences

If a previous visit was difficult, you can tell us as much or as little as you feel comfortable sharing. Knowing what helped, and what didn't, lets Dr. Maiurano plan the visit with you.

A familiar face next time

Dr. Maiurano is the dentist you'll see at our Springfield office. As she gets to know you, the things that help can become part of the way you work together. You can remind us of a preference, change your mind, or ask for something different at any visit.

If having someone with you would help, ask us about arranging a support person. And if anxiety has kept you away for years, our page about returning to the dentist explains how we begin when there may be more to catch up on.

Keep talking to us

You may need something different at one visit than you did at the last. Tell us, even if we've known you for years. If you're too overwhelmed to continue, we'll talk through what can safely wait and how to approach the next visit.

Give us a call at (703) 455-5555. Simply telling us that you're nervous is enough to begin the conversation.
