Tooth-colored fillings

A cavity or worn filling may need a small repair. Dr. Maiurano will show you the area and explain how she plans to preserve as much healthy tooth as possible.

Hearing that you need a filling can be a surprise when the tooth feels fine. Or you may have noticed an edge that feels rough or a tooth that's become sensitive. We'll look at what's happening and talk with you before deciding on the repair.

Why a filling may be recommended

A filling replaces tooth structure lost to decay or a small area of damage. It can also replace an existing filling that has broken down. Dr. Maiurano checks the size and position of the area, how much sound tooth remains, and how much force that tooth takes when you bite.

Tooth-colored filling material can be matched to your natural tooth. We'll also shape and check the repair so it works with the teeth beside it and the way you bite.

Could it need something different?

A tooth with a larger fracture or too little support may need a crown. At the other end of the scale, a very early change may be suitable for monitoring. Dr. Maiurano will show you the area when possible and explain why she recommends one approach for this tooth.

What the appointment is like

We'll explain the steps and make sure the tooth is adequately numb before beginning. Dr. Maiurano removes the damaged area, places the filling, and shapes it to fit the tooth. Before you leave, she checks how your teeth meet when you close and move your jaw.

If you've had trouble getting numb or feel nervous about dental treatment, let us know in advance. We can agree on how to pause and how much explanation you'd like along the way.

Looking after your filling

Before you leave, we'll explain what to expect after your filling and how to care for the tooth at home. If a question comes up later, give us a call.
